This desire to ‘go back’ to a space that has never been visited, but has been evoked via participation and imagery is a constant within this community. India is imagined as a very real and tangible place, constructed outside the West where the activists live — and in many cases, have never left. Moreover, if there are fractures, then it is considered up to the people of the Diaspora to reconnect the various communities together, to bring about change. For example, at the 2002 AID conference in San Francisco, an invited speaker at a presentation9 stated,

We think it’s very, very important for people outside of India to be engaged in struggles in India…. Most of us are Indians and Indian-Americans. We actually occupy a special space politically speaking and socially speaking … in this larger scheme of things, and by that what I mean is that we are — most of us here are — classified by the Indian government as the NRI community, the non-resident Indian community …. And the Indian government actually looks to us a lot, and in many times has bent over backwards, gives us a lot of preferences, to get things done in India …. They especially look to this community here in the United States … they target their outreach especially to get investment from the Indian community … we need to engage this crowd much more….
